History

1919 Establishment of the Polish State Hydrological Service.
Establishment of the State Meteorological Institute by the Council of Ministers' decree dated 28 April 1919 (the official gazette announcing current legislation of the Republic of Poland no. 39 para. 290)
1921 Formation of the Maritime Service.
1922 The State Meteorological Institute was granted its separate statutes by the Parliament Act.
1934 The Hydrographic Institute was named.
1939-1945 Second World War - continuation of hydrological and climatological measurements.
1945 Establishment of the State Hydrological and Meteorological Institute (PIHM).
Formation of PIHM branches (regional offices) in Białystok, Gdynia, Katowice, Kraków, Poznań, Słupsk, Warszawa, Wrocław and temporarily in Łódź.
1952 Start of actinometric measurement network operation.
1957 First atmosphere radiation measurements started.
1960 The Council of Ministers passed a decree on formation of the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management.
1963 Beginning of air chemical pollution measurements.
1964 Meteorological radar launching.
1965 Rocket sounding of upper air began.
1967 Beginning of regular satellite data receiving.
1971 Electronic Calculation Technique Centre opened.
1973 The State Hydrological and Meteorological Institute was combined with the Institute of Water Management into the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management.
Water Research and Measurement Centre was launched.
1986 Service for Technical Dam Control was created.
1987 Starting of personal computers implementation.
1988 State water quality monitoring began.
1989 Introduction of data and information exchange system with the speed of 9600 bits/s.
1991 Automation of aerological measurement systems was implemented.
1992 Purchase of IMB AS 400 computer, databases modernisation, installation of first automated meteorological stations.
1993 Start of operation of the specialised X.25 METPAK communication network.
Purchase of first weather Doppler radar.
1994 Implementation of homogenous within the IMGW structure Operational Hydrology System (SHO)
Baltic Sea Atlas was published.
1995 Elaboration and implementation of HYDRO-MET SERWIS
TCP/IP network putting into operation.
1996 Installation of new receiving station of digital satellite data in Kraków (Cracow).
Implementation of Integrated Marine Operational Hydrology System.
1997 Active participation of IMGW units in the activities of Central Emergency Staff as well as in provincial and local flood committees.
Elaboration of monitoring and hydrological-meteorological forecasting project (Monitoring, Forecasting and Warning System).
Loan agreement was signed between the Government of Poland and the World Bank for implementation of Emergency Flood Recovery Project including modernisation of hydrological and meteorological services.
1998 Mesoscale ALADIN model was implemented and put into operation in Kraków (Cracow) branch of IMGW.
Www server with IMGW web page started.
Purchase of new IBM AS 400 server for Central Historical Data Base.
1999 Installation of 42 automated MAWS meteorological stations.
2000 IMGW joined the Regional TCP/IP Network for Meteorological Data Communication (RMDCN) (Regional Meteorological Data Centre Network).
First UV index forecast issued (published).
Start of operation of first VSAT satellite links for radar data transmission.
IMGW joined consortium of supercomputer centers.
IMGW signed contracts for implementation of Monitoring, Forecasting and Warning System components.
2001 Implementation of Monitoring, Forecasting and Warning System components consisting of:
  • Telemetry hydrological and meteorological measurement network.
  • Warning and hydrological forecasting system.
  • Forecasting meteorological model.
  • IMGW teleinformation system and Customer Service System.
  • Control laboratory for instruments checking.
  • Lightning detection system and development of weather radar system.
2002 Implementation of advanced teleinformation system covering IMGW headquarters, branches (regional offices), forecasting offices and aviation meteorological stations.
Customer Service System launched
Lightning Detection System put into operation
Regional teams equipped with modern instruments.
